Coronado Community Center
City of Coronado

The Coronado Community Center will become the social, cultural, and activity hub of the City. Situated along a pedestrian promenade, at the south end of the Glorietta Bay Master Plan Development the building is part of the City’s new bayfront civic center. The building is currently under construction and when completed will include 200 seat banquet facilities, state-of-the-art catering kitchen, 120 seat community theater, meeting / activity rooms, fitness facilities, NCAA size gymnasium, two pools, and locker rooms. The centerpiece of the building is a public lobby with climbing wall, game area, lounge, and juice bar.

The multi-use facility is organized into activity zones in order to avoid conflicting uses. We used the concept of “suits vs. sweats” to separate athletics activities from meeting and entertainment functions. A variety of “outdoor rooms” take full advantage of the building’s bayfront park location. Operable windows throughout the building make the building extremely energy efficient and contribute toward a connection between the building exterior and interior. An on site microturbine associated with the pool equipment will generate power which the city will sell back to the utility company.

Material and color selections for the building were based on three primary criteria; sustainability, to blend seamlessly into both the natural and built context, and to withstand the harsh marine environment. A strong effort to utilize products with recycled / renewable content wherever appropriate. This philosophy also applies to the selection of equipment, for which Robbins Jorgensen Christopher is also responsible.

Robbins Jorgensen Christopher is also the master planner, architect, landscape architect, and interior designer for the Coronado City Hall and Glorietta Bay Master Plan.
