James Robbins, AIA – Principal in Charge of Design
James is NCARB certified, and he is a LEED Accredited Professional. Under his direction, the firm has won over 40 design awards since 1992. He is past president of AIA San Diego and a past board member of AIA California Council. James has acted as lead design architect in successful design/build competitions totaling over a billion dollars. He has a long record of public service, including membership in the Mayor's Design Advisory Group, the City of San Diego's Multi Family Design Guidelines Task Force, and the Old Town Trolley Extension Task Force. He served as consultant for historic architecture to the Centre City Development Corporation (the City of San Diego's Redevelopment Agency) from 1996 to 2001. A graduate of Princeton University, with a Master of Architecture from Rice University, he was named "Best Architect in San Diego" in a reader's poll conducted by Metropolitan magazine.

Janene Christopher, AIA – Principal in Charge of Production
Janene has been responsible for construction documents for more than 1,000 renovated and new buildings, including the new San Diego County Operations Center, the largest public works project in history of the Region. A past President of Women in Architecture, Janene has served on the Art in Public Places Committee of the San Diego Commission on Arts and Culture, and the Port of San Diego Public Arts Commission. She is a graduate of the University of Florida, with a Master of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. At Cal Poly, Janene won the Henry Adams medal as the outstanding graduate student. She is a LEAD graduate and currently serves on several AIA committees.

Greg Roberson, AIA – Senior Associate, Director of Sustainable Design
Mr. Roberson, a LEED Accredited Professional, is a licensed architect with over 30 years of professional experience. He joined RJC Architects after working as project manager on the historic restoration of the San Bernardino Santa Fe Depot (1918), rehabilitation of the San Diego County Administration Center (1938), and multiple educational projects. Greg’s projects have received extensive national and local design recognition and have been published in national journals. His recent work includes the Educational Cultural Complex and the West City Center for the San Diego Community College District, a new headquarters for the Padre Dam Municipal Water District, and a research laboratory for the Naval Weapons Station China Lake. A graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Greg is also a licensed general contractor, member of the AIA-COTE committee, San Dieguito River Conservancy board of directors, and a member of the Ramona Design Review Board and Village Planning committee.

Dan Stewart, AIA - Senior Associate
Mr. Stewart is an architect with over 25 years of professional experience. Dan graduated from the University of Arizona, where he was the first scholarship athlete to receive a professional degree in architecture. The self-discipline and time management skills that he first exhibited as a student have been employed in increasingly responsible architectural positions ever since. His professional experience includes wide-ranging and complex assignments for all branches of government, including: a world-wide Strategic Facilities Maintenance Plan for Flag Quarters of the United States Navy; and programming, planning, and design of public administration centers for the Cities of Escondido, La Mesa, Oxnard, and Corona. Dan’s experience in developing the County of San Diego’s Strategic Facilities Master Plan has been particularly valuable in designing the new County Operations Center. Dan has also acted as project manager for a wide range of commercial office/industrial projects, including our work at the Bressi Ranch Business Park in Carlsbad and The Vista at Rancho Bernardo. A former member of the Peninsula Community Planning Board, Dan is a current member of Citizens’ Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) and the American Institute of Architects.

Julie King, SDA – Associate, Business Manager
Ms. King has been a Professional Administrator in the Architecture & Engineering community since 1993. She joined RJC Architects in July 1999. Past Experience includes: Tierra Mechanical, Smith Consulting Architects, Enartec, and AES Inc. Ms. King is involved with the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Design Administration and has served as President. On a National level, she has chaired a Western Regional Conference and Co-Chaired the 2003 National Convention. Currently Ms. King is the President of Canstruction San Diego (www.canstructionsd.org), an industry charity that raises approximately 50,000 pounds of food annually for local families.

Juan Silva, RA – Associate
Mr. Silva, a LEED Accredited Professional, is a registered architect with over 15 years of professional experience. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where his education included participation in an exchange program with Virginia Tech. Upon graduation, Juan spent five years with Milford Wayne Donaldson, a national leader in historic preservation, where he gained solid technical expertise through extensive research into material systems and first-hand observation of material systems failure. During this time, Juan played a significant role in the renovation of several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the San Diego County Administration Center and the Balboa Park Organ Pavilion. Since joining RJC Architects, Juan has utilized his technical expertise in the design of buildings for clients that care deeply about life cycle cost. Recently, Mr. Silva has served as the project manager for design of Fire Stations 5 and 43 for the City of Los Angeles, the Padre Dam Municipal Water District Customer Service Center, the United States Marines Force Intelligence Operations Center, and the site design of the San Diego County Operations Center.

Tom Garcia, AICP- Director of Landscape Architecture
Mr. Garcia is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University where he received both a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and a Masters of Urban Planning. He is a licensed landscape architect and certified planner with over 20 years of professional experience. Mr. Garcia has combined his analytical background in planning with the technical and artistic requirements of landscape architecture. He currently directs and provides technical support for: site related functions and amenities; landscape improvements emphasizing the use of native plant material and low-volume irrigation systems; and project management. He is responsible for projects such as civic parks, university and commercial site design, and numerous military design/build projects. He is also responsible for site program evaluation and analysis for various military user groups. His holistic approach to design ensures that the needs of the user and community are met while preserving and enhancing the integrity of the natural environment. Tom's recent work includes BEQ Package 8 at camp Pendleton, BEQ P-742 at Coronado, Boulevard Border Patrol Station, West City Center Community College, Yacht Club Promenade Park Extension for the City of Coronado and the Temporary Lodging Facility at Camp Pendleton.

Kelly Murphy, IIDA – Interior Designer
Kelly is an interior designer with over 10 years of professional experience. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Design Institute of San Diego. Utilizing skills acquired throughout her time at RJC Architects, she has continued to gain a solid background in programming, space planning, and FF&E coordination. Additionally, Kelly has gained solid technical expertise in specifying finish materials through direct research and project experience. Past project experience includes UCI Anteater Recreation Center, Padre Dam Customer Service Center, BOQ Miramar Building 4312, San Diego Community College District West City Center Campus and San Diego County Credit Union Kearny Mesa Branch. Currently, Ms. Murphy is serving as an interior designer for the design of the San Diego County Operations Center Campus for the County of San Diego, the largest LEED Gold and Platinum projects in San Diego.

John Turpit, AIA – Director of Corporate and Developer Services
Mr. Turpit, an architectural veteran with over 25 years of local experience, provides a private sector perspective on the firm's work in such areas as education and public administration facilities, renovation, and adaptive reuse. Mr. Turpit, who started his own architectural firm in 1983, has worked with such high-profile clients as the Koll Company, The Irvine Company, Lowe Enterprises, Hughes Network Systems, BAE Systems, Qualcomm, Hitachi Home Electronics, and Sony Corporation. He provides leadership in marketing, programming, and client service, while directing the firm’s corporate and commercial division.

John Hinkel, AIA – Director of Design
As an experienced, award winning Architect, John has designed a variety of complex and high profile projects in Southern California and throughout the world including aquariums, museums, high-rise office, mixed-use residential/retail, waterfront planning, campus office, affordable housing, hospitality, military, and higher education project types in both suburban and urban environments. He has completed individual buildings as large as $130M and has co-master planned projects in excess of $1.3 Billion. Mr. Hinkel has been a contributor to the growth of the greater San Diego metropolitan area since 1990 with such projects as the Chula Vista’s Civic Center, San Diego State University’s Aztecs Athletics Center, and the educational main entry Whale Sculpture at the Stephen Birch Aquarium. Mr. Hinkel has completed projects both nationally and internationally. John has provided services in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the U.A.E. A graduate from Kent State University and the NewSchool of Architecture, John is a member of the American Institute of Architects, a past voting member of the AIASD’s Urban Design Committee, and has maintained a long association with the NewSchool of Architecture and Design as a design instructor, thesis advisor, committee member of the Professional Courses Sub-committee, and committee member of the Vision and Mission Statement Subcommittee.
